Laura McCoy, Lead Teacher

We are thrilled to welcome the incredibly talented Laura McCoy to our Headwaters Academy family! With ​a rich background in education and a deep passion for the natural world, Laura is a fantastic addition to our team.

Laura holds an M.S. Ed. in Curriculum and Instruction Design with a Specialization in Outdoor Education from Northern Illinois University, and a B.A. in Cultural and Ecological Education ​and Elementary Education from Mercyhurst College. Her experience as a Lead Teacher at Prairie School of DuPage showcases expertise in developing curriculum that integrates science, social studies, and outdoor observation, all while aligning with learning standards.

Her dedication to hands-on learning is evident in her leadership of the school garden, maple tapping program, and the inspiring student-led initiative to designate the Giant Puffball as the Illinois State Mushroom! Laura's commitment to fostering curiosity and a love for nature perfectly aligns with ​the Headwaters Academy ​intent to cultivate confident, capable learners and leaders for a changing world through experience-based learning.

We know Laura's passion for connecting children with nature and her innovative teaching methods will be invaluable in helping our students grow.
