Looking for a nature-based learning adventure?
Headwaters is a Montessori-inspired K-8 microschool in Kane County, IL.
A different kind of school for a different kind of childhood
Headwaters Academy is a small, land-based, Montessori-informed microschool where children learn to think clearly, work deeply, and care for the world around them.
We believe childhood is not preparation for life, it is life. And it deserves to be thoughtful, rigorous, joyful, and real.
Why Families Come to Headwaters
Most families don’t begin searching for a different school because everything is going perfectly. They come because something feels off. Their child is bright, but bored. Capable, but under-challenged. Sensitive, but overwhelmed. Curious, but losing momentum.
Or their child is doing fine, but something is missing.
We take instincts like these seriously. We build environments where children are expected to work, to grow, to contribute, and where they are supported in becoming steady, capable human beings.
Intentionally Small, Intentionally Human
Our program blends:
Montessori principles: independence, mixed ages, real responsibility
Land-based learning: food systems, stewardship, outdoor skills, ecological awareness
Structured academics: small group instruction and deep focus
Social-emotional development: explicit teaching of regulation, communication, and ownership
We are not a free-for-all, and we aren’t a factory model. We’re building a culture where children learn to manage their time, take pride in their work, and move through challenge without collapsing.
What Makes Our Approach Different
Whenever possible, we begin outdoors: tending the land, observing seasonal changes, or working together on meaningful projects.
Academic blocks are focused and intentional. Students work independently and in small groups. Social-emotional learning is woven into the week, not added as an afterthought. Students practice communication, reflection, and responsibility as part of daily life. There is freedom here, but it’s structured. There is autonomy, but it’s earned and supported.
We teach kids how to be in the world.
